The BIRT project made its first major release in the summer of 2005 with a cumulative total of over 1 million downloads. Let’s start with a description of the BIRT designer we will use to create the BIRT report designer, and then we will end with a working example of the BIRT viewer used to deploy the design and generate a completed report.

Report editor

Use the Report Editor as a workspace for creating reports, positioning and formatting report elements. Within this view are the Layout, Master Page, Script, XML Source, and Preview tabs.

The Layout tab is used as a visual layout for the report and supports drag and drop functionality.

The Master Page tab is used to set the background image for the header, footer and the entire report. For example, we often use it to place a company header on this page.

The Script tab is accessible to the JavaScript editor. BIRT supports an event model where handlers written in Java or JavaScript are available allowing you to modify report properties such as font color, data values

The XML Source tab displays the XML source code for your report design. It is possible to edit the XML directly in this tab, but it is usually preferable to use the Layout view.

The Preview tab allows report developers to quickly see an HTML rendering of the report they are working on. In addition, you can preview the report in other formats from the toolbar.

Extensible visualization

The visualization is extensible and can be customized by any author with the required skills. You can create client-side visualizations that report consumers can run when they are not connected to the web.

Visualizations that you can add to your reports include tree maps, heat maps, packed bubble visualizations, network diagrams, and more.

You can set the available properties for each type of visualization. These properties are determined by the visualization definition. In general, you can set properties such as width, height, animation effects, and fixed axis scaling.

Extensible visualizations support all interactivity for active reports. For example, you can use controls in an active report to dynamically filter your Active intelligence visualizations to show only the data that you need to analyze.
